A Toddling Strawberry Thief

As I was watering the garden, I noticed it had become eerily quiet. Too quiet. Sand was not being flung. The dog was not being chased. A snack was not being demanded.

That’s when I saw Evie.

She was crouched down by our tiny strawberry plant. And she was popping all of the miniature, unripe strawberries into her mouth. She had swiftly demolished all of the little strawberries the plant had just started producing.

This small amount of strawberries seemed to only serve to awaken her insatiable need of more strawberries. Tears were forming. She wanted more. So, we decided to head up to Greenbluff to some good old fashioned U-Picking.

Even though it was early, Siemers Farm was already crawling with people picking warm, red strawberries. We hopped out of the car, grabbed our basket and joined in.

Evie was a natural. Her tiny hands quickly found the juiciest, ripest strawberries. And she popped them into her mouth as fast as she could. Despite our best efforts for her to add them to the basket, she continued gorging herself. Her little face had become stained with the sweet red juice.

Now, we didn’t pick nearly as many as I expected. Likely because Aaron and Evie didn’t really help. Aaron’s color blindness was leading him to pick white, unripe berries. And Evie, well, she was feasting.

A momma’s work is never done.

About Siemers Farm – Strawberry Picking

  • 11125 E. Day Mount Spokane Road (follow the signs once you’re at Greenbluff — our phone map took us to the wrong farm).
  • Call to see what’s available (509) 238-6242.
  • Try to get there early. There’s not any shade when you’re picking, so cool morning hours seem to be best.
  • They didn’t have wagons, like some u-pick places. Maybe because the rows are so narrow. If you have little kids you need to wrangle, I would suggest bring a stroller and staying on the edge to pick.
  • Everyone was friendly. The couple behind us chatted and chatted with us.
