Dear Lady at Trader Joe’s
Dear Lady at Trader Joe’s,
I noticed when you put your van into reverse and started to let off the brake. I gave you a smile to let you know that I hoped I was not in you way as I held my daughter on my hip and moved bags of groceries into my car’s trunk.
You see, my daughter is at a stage where she doesn’t like to sit in the cart. She’s also at a stage where she does not like to sit in her carseat any longer than absolutely necessary (and I can only sing Baby Beluga so many times without going insane). So, I hold her on my hip. Sometimes it can make simple tasks take a little longer. But I don’t mind. In fact, I really love having her little body hold onto mine.
Today, it was busy in the parking lot and I did my best to move quickly. But cars were parked very close together and I had to leave my cart on the sidewalk and move around the car with each load.
It was taking longer than I had expected.
That’s when I noticed that instead of reversing, you had put your van back into park. I was in the middle of making room for my next load of groceries when you walked over to my cart and began loading the final bags into my car. I said thank you and let you know that I could manage it. But you insisted.
With a heavy accent, you told me about your twin granddaughters. They are a little older than my daughter. You know how much work it is.
Our conversation was short. I thanked you. My daughter waved her small hand. And we parted ways.
My thoughts have gone back to your simple act of kindness many times. I am a stranger. You did not need to help. But you stopped and took care of my family without question. My heart is grateful for you and people like you.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
An appreciative mom
